Which delivery method to choose for furniture transportation. How to preserve furniture during various types of transportation

Every apartment and office, hotels and restaurants have beds, tables, chairs, cabinets, nightstands, shelves, all of which are combined under the concept of furniture. Although furniture serves for a long time, the demand for it does not decrease, but rather increases. This is not only due to people replacing old furniture with new, but also due to the growing needs for office, restaurant, and hotel furniture. Naturally, furniture from the manufacturer must be delivered to the shopping center, from there to the customer, and if the furniture owner decides to change their residence, the furniture will most likely follow them. The volume of cargo transportation of household and industrial furniture is constantly growing.

Features of furniture transportation as cargo

By structural and technological criteria, furniture is divided into:

  • Disassemblable.
  • Non-disassemblable.
  • Built-in.

In built-in furniture, part of the frame of the furniture consists of elements of the room in which it stands. Such furniture can be dismantled from these structures, in which case the furniture elements will consist of panels and boards, which are quite easy and convenient to transport. The same situation applies to disassemblable furniture, in a prepared state for transportation, it consists of panels, boards, packed in cardboard, paper, or boxes, and a box or bag with hardware for its assembly. All disassemblable furniture, in transport condition, can be tightly packed in the cargo compartment of the vehicle, which allows for maximum use of its volume and load capacity.

There are more difficulties when transporting non-disassemblable furniture. These can be heavy items. Most of this furniture has voids that are filled with items during moves. When transporting non-disassemblable furniture from the manufacturer, these voids remain unfilled, which reduces the efficiency of transport use. Non-disassemblable furniture from the manufacturer is usually delivered in boxes that protect it from damage during transit. The strength of any furniture packaging is insufficient, so during loading and unloading operations, as well as in transit, one must handle the furniture with utmost care.

Even cheap furniture is a relatively expensive item, and the carrier's responsibility is high. Despite the prevalence of plastic and metal furniture, most furniture is made of wood or its derivatives (plywood, chipboard, fibreboard). Upholstered furniture, over the frames, is covered with soft materials and upholstered with fabric or leather. Wood and its derivatives, as well as upholstery materials, can be damaged by atmospheric precipitation and sunlight. All surfaces of the furniture in transit must be protected from damage. Even a small scratch on these surfaces can become a serious problem for the owner, and consequently for the carrier.

Rules for transporting furniture

Furniture is transported according to the following rules:

  • The conditions for transporting furniture must guarantee it against damage from atmospheric precipitation, increased humidity in transport, and sunlight.
  • All disassemblable furniture must be disassembled. Its panels must be packed in materials that protect them from damage during transit. Hardware must be packed separately.
  • Non-disassemblable furniture must be in protective packaging.
  • During transportation, furniture must be secured in the vehicle with straps and other devices. To avoid damaging the furniture with straps and from contact with elements of the vehicle's structure, soft padding materials (fabric, foam, polystyrene, etc.) are used.
  • An important point is the correct placement of all transported cargo. This is especially important during apartment and office moves. The internal cavities of the furniture, during such moves, are filled with other items that cannot damage it. The absence of unfilled voids increases the efficiency of transport use, as furniture is a relatively light cargo, and compacting the load allows for less transport to be used.

Transportation of furniture by different types of transport

Furniture can be transported by all modern cargo types of transport: road, rail, water, and air.

When transporting furniture by trucks, tarpaulin or all-metal vans, trailers, and semi-trailers are used. On clear days, for short transports that do not require a long time, open trucks can be used. Usually, under these conditions, they are used for apartment and office moves. Furniture can be transported on truck platforms, packed in containers.

When transporting furniture by rail, covered wagons and containers are used. Containers can be placed on platforms or in flatcars.

For furniture transportation by water, bulk carriers and container ships are used. In the latter case, the furniture must be packed in a container.

Air cargo transport can carry containers with furniture and unpacked furniture. However, such transportation is expensive and is rarely used for furniture transport.

Those who want to know the cost of furniture transportation and find a carrier should place their request in the “Add Cargo” section. The carrier's staff will contact you.
