Find a vehicle for transporting mineral wool. Freight transportation of mineral wool
The term mineral wool encompasses glass wool, basalt wool, and wool made from molten slag. All these materials are used for insulating walls, roofs, and pipes. The use of mineral wool in construction allows for significantly thinner walls while meeting the requirements for thermal conductivity. Insulated pipelines made with mineral wool can remain unfrozen even at negative temperatures, allowing them to be placed on the surface of the ground. Mineral wool enjoys a high and stable demand, and its transportation is quite extensive.
Features of mineral wool as cargo
Mineral wool is non-flammable and does not react with acids and alkalis. From a cargo transportation perspective, mineral wool is a lightweight but bulky cargo. Therefore, for its transportation, it is advisable to choose vehicles with a large cargo compartment, while the load capacity of the transport can be low.
It is considered that mineral wool can potentially be hazardous to humans due to the mineral fibers that can enter the respiratory organs and the gas emissions from the resins that bind the mineral wool. No precise scientific data proving the validity of this opinion has been obtained from research. It is believed that transporting mineral wool can be done without harm to health. However, a number of countries have imposed restrictions on the use of various types of mineral wool. Particularly strict restrictions exist in Germany. When planning international transportation of mineral wool, it is necessary to study the legislation on this issue in the countries along the cargo route.
Rules for transporting mineral wool
When transporting mineral wool, the following rules must be observed:
- Mineral wool is supplied by the industry in rolls or slabs packed in polyethylene or shrink film. However, this packaging does not ensure complete airtightness of the contents. To avoid wetting the mineral wool, it should be transported in covered vehicles.
- After transporting mineral wool, its fibers remain in the cargo compartment of the vehicle, which may potentially harm human health. Therefore, the legislation of a number of countries, including Russia, requires that the cargo compartment be thoroughly washed after transporting mineral wool.
- The cargo, such as mineral wool, must be secured in the cargo compartment so that it does not shift or scatter during transit.
- There are no special requirements for placing mineral wool in cargo vans and truck bodies. That is, packages containing it can be placed in the transport standing or lying down, as long as the cargo is not damaged.
- The shipper must provide the carrier with all the necessary documents for transportation.
Transportation of mineral wool by different types of transport
Road, air, water (sea and river), and rail transport, that is, all types of modern transport, can be used for transporting mineral wool.
If mineral wool is transported by road, covered (tarpaulin or all-metal) vans, trailers, and semi-trailers are used. In good weather, over short distances, mineral wool can be transported in open trucks. Mineral wool packed in containers can be transported on truck platforms.
When transporting mineral wool by rail, covered wagons and rail platforms are used for transporting mineral wool in containers. Water transport carries mineral wool in containers on container ships, as well as on bulk carriers. Aviation is capable of transporting both containers with mineral wool and unpackaged mineral wool cargo. However, air transport is the most expensive, and it is rarely used for transporting mineral wool.
