Features of transporting construction materials as cargo

The main feature of construction materials as cargo is the extremely wide range of construction materials. Each material has its own characteristics and requires its own transportation conditions. Conditionally, all construction materials can be divided into the following special groups:

• Heavyweight. Reinforced concrete slabs, wall panels, and other products from concrete plants have a very high weight and require special transportation conditions. Sometimes such products exceed the permitted parameters for transportation on roads, and it is necessary to organize the transportation of oversized cargo.
• Long-length. Pipes, rebar, lumber, and all long-length items require special transport and special transportation conditions.
• Fragile. Window blocks, finishing tiles, roofing tiles, and other materials can be broken or cracked during improper transportation.
• Bulk. Cement, sand, dry mixes, and other bulk cargo can be transported either in packaged form in bags or in bulk. Depending on how bulk cargo is transported and what exactly this cargo is, different types of transport are required.
• Chemical products for construction. Construction sites consume a huge amount of products from chemical plants. Varnishes, paints, solvents, adhesives, various water-repellent impregnations, and other similar materials require special transportation conditions. Some of these products are classified as hazardous cargo and require transportation to be organized in accordance with ADR regulations.

This classification is not exhaustive and can be continued indefinitely. The main thing to understand is that for the transportation of each construction material, it is necessary to choose transport that corresponds to its individual characteristics.

Rules for the freight transportation of construction materials

Freight transportation of construction materials is organized according to the following rules:

• The shipper must provide a complete set of documents for organizing the freight transportation.
• For organizing oversized transportation, it is necessary to obtain approval from the relevant authorities.
• The transportation of hazardous cargo must be organized in accordance with ADR regulations.
• For each cargo of construction materials, appropriate transport must be selected.
• Construction materials must be loaded into the cargo compartment in such a way as to maximize the useful volume and load capacity of the transport.
• After transporting certain construction materials, particularly mineral wool, the cargo compartment of the transport must be thoroughly cleaned.
• The cargo of construction materials must be secured in the transport to prevent its spontaneous movement in the cargo compartment during transit, and to prevent spillage, loss, or leakage of cargo.

Transportation of construction materials by different types of transport

All types of modern freight transport can participate in the transportation of construction materials: road, rail, water, and air.

All types of freight road transport are involved in the transportation of construction materials. Universal trucks in open or covered versions, as well as trailers, semi-trailers, and tank trucks are widely used. Dump trucks are widely used for transporting bulk construction materials. For transporting construction chemicals that require special storage conditions, all types of road transport may be needed in isothermal or refrigerated versions. Specialized road transport vehicles are also used for transporting construction materials: panel trucks, concrete mixer trucks, etc.

All types of rolling stock are used for transporting construction materials by rail: boxcars, flatcars, rail platforms, hoppers, etc.

For transporting construction materials by water, bulk carriers, dry cargo ships, and container ships are used — for transporting construction materials packed in containers. Within multimodal transportation, containers with construction materials are transported by all types of transport.

Due to the high cost of air transportation, construction materials are rarely transported by aircraft, but there are no technical restrictions on this.
