What is a dangerous cargo, and how are such cargos transported

Dangerous goods are those that can harm a person or the environment in the event of an emergency situation. This refers to poisoning people or nature as a result of spillage or leakage, explosions, ignition, radioactive contamination due to improper transportation or accidents.

The special UN list includes more than 3000 substances classified as such, each of which has its own individual four-digit number. Based on the UN list, Europe has its own agreement on such transport, known in Latin abbreviation as ADR.

According to the ADR agreement, dangerous goods are divided into 9 classes. Special rules for their transportation are established for each class. Six types of danger are defined:

1. Explosion hazard.
2. Ignition hazard.
3. Toxicity (poisonousness).
4. Corrosiveness. This property is characterized by the ability of a substance to cause corrosion.
5. Radioactive contamination hazard.
6. Oxidizing activity. This property of a dangerous substance characterizes its ability to support and enhance combustion.

The logistics of dangerous goods require specially prepared transport and personnel who have undergone special training. To transport ADR goods, a license is required. When transporting ADR goods, a note is made in the waybill: “Dangerous cargo”. In addition to the standard package of documents, it is necessary to:

• Certificate that the driver has undergone training and can transport dangerous goods.
• Certificate that the transport is adapted and permitted to transport substances that pose a danger.
• Special license.

Depending on the type of dangerous cargo, it can be transported by trucks, trailers, semi-trailers, tankers, and other types of vehicles. The main thing is that the transport is prepared and equipped for such transportation.

A vehicle carrying dangerous goods is marked with a special sign at the front and back. The sign is a yellow rectangle divided by a horizontal black stripe. Above the stripe and the stripe are Arabic numerals. At the top is the numerical designation of the danger class according to a special table (2 or 3 digits), and at the bottom is the number of the dangerous substance according to the UN list (4 digits).

Each vehicle transporting dangerous goods must have an ADR kit, which includes:

10. Plastic container with a capacity of 10 liters for collecting spilled or leaked dangerous substances.

If the transportation is serviced by a crew of several people, the first five items on the list must be provided for each crew member.
