The situation is significantly more complicated with heavy wheeled vehicles. How Heavy-Duty Tow Trucks are Designed and Operate

Let’s clarify right away that tracked heavy vehicles are not transported on tow trucks, but on low-bed trailers, which are often called low loaders. Some tow trucks for trucks are designed based on principles similar to those of tow trucks for passenger cars. Such tow trucks consist of a cargo platform onto which wheeled vehicles can drive on their own. If movement is impossible, the vehicle intended for evacuation is pulled onto the platform by powerful winches or lifted by a crane. The presence of a crane and a winch with a lifting capacity of 15 to 30 tons as part of the tow truck is a sign that this vehicle is intended for the evacuation of heavy machinery.

Tow trucks built according to the principles described above cannot transport truly heavy machinery. If the equipment to be evacuated is indeed heavy, tow trucks built on a different principle are used. The vehicle is not fully loaded onto them. At the rear of such tow trucks, there is a special device that lifts and secures the front or rear axle of the vehicle being evacuated. The second axle remains on the road, and the vehicle is evacuated like a trailer.

Application of Tow Trucks for Heavy Machinery and Their Characteristics

Quite often, operational wheeled machinery is transported on cargo tow trucks. This refers to specialized agricultural and construction vehicles (combines, bulldozers, rollers, etc.) that cannot be moved on public roads under their own power due to exceeding permissible dimensions, or it is impractical to move them this way due to their slow speed.

When it comes to providing assistance on the highway to a truck that has been in an accident or is malfunctioning, the help that a heavy tow truck can provide is not limited to transportation. With the help of a powerful winch, it can pull trucks weighing up to 70 tons out of a ditch, and with the crane, it can help set an overturned truck back on its wheels.

Different models of heavy tow trucks have different characteristics. The maximum weight of the vehicle they can transport can range from 10 to 40 tons. For example, the Volvo FH 8x4 EMPL tow truck model can transport vehicles weighing 40 tons.
