What cargo is considered oversized, and how is it transported

The following dimensions are established for transportation on public roads (all dimensions include the vehicle transporting the cargo):

• The total length of the cargo and transport must not exceed 20 meters. If the length fits within this dimension, but the cargo extends beyond the transport in length, the overhang must not exceed two meters.
• The width of the transport and the protruding cargo must not exceed 2.55 meters.
• The height of the cargo with the transport must not exceed 4 meters.
• The weight of the cargo with the transport must not exceed 38 tons.

If at least one of these parameters is exceeded, the cargo is considered oversized and requires special coordination for transportation and compliance with special rules.

In populated areas, the transportation of oversized cargo is carried out only at night or early in the morning when traffic flow is minimal. Outside populated areas, oversized cargo is allowed to be transported only during daylight hours. Obtaining a permit for oversized transportation is a lengthy and labor-intensive process that can take from a week to several months. When transporting oversized cargo, the vehicle must be marked with special signs in the form of red diagonal stripes on a white background. Oversized transportation must be accompanied by a road police vehicle.

Most often, low-bed trailers, commonly referred to as "trails," are used for transporting oversized cargo. The length of the trailers can range from 11 to 20 meters, and the width ranges from 2.5 to 3.7 meters. The load capacity of a low-bed trailer largely depends on the number of axles with wheels installed on it. The number of axles can range from 1 to 8. The maximum load capacity is 93 tons.
