Ways to Deliver Cargo to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Export, Import, and Transit of Goods to Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the least economically developed countries in Europe. During the breakup of Yugoslavia and the subsequent wars, the country lost approximately 75% of its economic potential. Currently, the country is slowly recovering with funds from the EU and investors from neighboring Slovenia. There is production of inexpensive cars, components for household appliances, aviation, and automotive engineering. The output of the textile industry is gradually increasing. Agriculture occupies half of the country's territory, while only half of the agricultural land is cultivated. The rest of this land is occupied by mountain meadows and pastures.

State of Transport in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Despite the weak economy, all types of modern transport are represented in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Road, rail, and air transport are relatively well developed. Water transport is in its infancy.

Cargo Transportation in Bosnia and Herzegovina by Road Transport

The majority of roads in Bosnia and Herzegovina are two-lane. Some formally two-lane roads are very narrow. Oncoming vehicles have to pull over to the shoulders to pass each other. Most of the roads run through the mountains, which involves overcoming "serpentines," steep turns, and tunnels. Wild and domestic animals often appear on the roads.

Nevertheless, the condition of the road surface on highways is quite good. The total length of roads in Bosnia and Herzegovina is about 23,000 km, of which 19,500 km have a solid surface. There are toll sections on the highways.

Air Transport in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The country has 24 airports, only 7 of which have a solid surface on the runway. There are 4 international airports in:

  • Sarajevo.
  • Mostar.
  • Tuzla.
  • Banja Luka.

Cargo transportation to Bosnia and Herzegovina by air is not very popular due to its high cost.

Cargo Transportation by Waterways in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Water transport in Bosnia and Herzegovina is in its infancy. There are several ports on the Sava River. Navigation to Croatia is possible on this river, but this route is used very rarely. The Neretva River provides access to the Adriatic Sea, but this route is also hardly used.

Rail Transport

The length of railways in Bosnia and Herzegovina is 601 km, of which 392 km are electrified. The gauge is European, which excludes the delivery of cargo from CIS countries by rail without transshipment along the way.

What Bosnia and Herzegovina Exports

Cars produced in the country are popular in neighboring states due to their low cost. There are deposits of bauxite, building stone, lignite, rock salt, manganese, and mercury ores in the country. However, the mining industry is just beginning to recover after the war, and it is not possible to talk about large-scale exports of minerals.
